The Department of Periodontics was founded in 1980 along with the creation of the Faculty of Dental Sciences.  The postgraduate course in Periodontics was started in 1965 under Prof. T.N. Chawala. The department also offers a 2 years certificate course of “Dental Hygienist” which was started in 1967.  These personnel have been absorbed in various State District Hospitals to promote dental health in the community. There are 4 seats annually for the MDS Course and 20 for the Dental Hygienist Course. After supernuation of Prof. T.N.Chawala, Prof. K.K. Kapoor took over as Head and continued till April 1994. Thereafter Prof. K.K. Mehrotra became Head and continued in office till 28th February 2001. At present Prof. Jaya Dixit is continuing as head of department since 1st March 2001.

The department has been involved in research projects funded by the national Institute of Health, USA under the PL 480, Indian Council of Medical Research and WHO. At present research work is under progress with collaboration with CDRI and ITRC.
