 Department of Oral & Maxillofacial surgery
 

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, an integral part of the Dental Faculty was started in the year 1967, with the first batch of MDS students passing out in 1969. The Department has been involved in the training of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental students since then. Prof. Shadab Mohammad presently heads the department, which has a total of 7 teachers, 3 Senior Residents and 15 Junior Residents.

Our department takes pride in the distinction of being one of the few centres in the country to be recognized by the Royal college of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, UK as a quality postgraduate training centre.

Facilities
The department offers outpatient facilities to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery patients. There are separate general anesthesia and local anesthesia Operation Theatres, an Exodontia clinic, a 20 bedded Inpatient Ward (12 male & 8 female), a seminar room, a dental laboratory and a Research Lab. Types of surgery performed include maxillofacial trauma, tumours, cancer and reconstruction, temporo-mandibular joint ankylosis, cosmetic surgery, correction of facial deformities, dental and maxillofacial implants.

Research

There are presently 2 ICMR, 1 DST and 2 intramural funded research projects undergoing.

  1.  Therapeutic intervention in OSMF – An experimental study. ICMR project under Prof. S Mohammad, Dr. V Singh
  2. Study on association of oral precancers with use of pan masala, ICMR project for 2 years under Prof. D  Mehrotra
  3. An innovation in distraction osteogenesis for mandibular regeneration using a refined transport distractor, DST project under Prof. D. Mehrotra
  4. Cox-2 Overexpression in Oral Cancer and its Clinico-pathological Significance. Intramural project under Dr Hari Ram.
  5. Vertical augmentation of alveolar ridges by alveolar distraction : A case control study.

1st center to start distraction in India (1996) with an indigenously fabricated distractor for poor patients, costing about Rs 600/-
Indigenous PMMA Prosthetic Joint Design developed by this department for poor patients (biocompatible)
